The Grand Tour

How did James May Get Fired from his Job? It’s Very James May!

As with all The Grand Tour hosts, James May comes from an automotive journalism background and as Richard Hammond joked around at the California taping, all three hosts had a tendency to get fired.

In James May’s case, the way and sheer genius of how he got fired has to be pointed out. During his time as a sub-editor for AutoCar magazine, May was in charge of putting together the annual road test year book, which is, as you can figure out, a collection of all the cars they reviewed in the year.

James May being James May decided to have some fun with the reviews and laid them out to spell out a very specific message that was able to slip by the AutoCar editors. Do you see it?

The prank wasn’t discovered until readers starting writing in, thinking there was a prize for the discovery of the hidden message (which I find absolutely amazing) and May was subsequently fired later in 1992.

We have to thank our friends at Shifting Lanes, a up and coming car blog that just beat Jalopnik on Facebook, with letting us know about this story. Make sure to go check them out for all the automotive news.

If you couldn’t figure out what May wrote in that photo above, here you go:

“SO YOU THINK IT”S REALLY GOOD, YEAH? YOU SHOULD TRY MAKING THE BLOODY THING UP; IT’S A REAL PAIN IN THE ARSE.”

Ahhh . . . intellectual humor. It’s is definitely missed.
