Jeremy Clarkson Involved in Police Clampdown as Racing Put on Hold

Jeremy Clarkson has found himself at the center of a police clampdown following a large gathering near his Oxfordshire pub, The Farmer’s Dog.

Situated in Asthall, near Burford, the pub became a focal point after the police gave a warning to the public, urging them to avoid the area on a Saturday morning. This advice came in light of nearby pony and trap races, an event that consists of horses pulling carts led by drivers, which took place close to Clarkson’s establishment.

Pony and trap racing, a traditional activity not specifically outlawed in the UK, involves horses pulling a small cart known as a trap. The event was deemed a “large gathering” by Thames Valley Police and required a police presence to ensure public safety and limit potential disruptions on the A40 near Witney.

Although no illegal activities were discovered, police officials were on hand to monitor any risks and keep a close eye on the situation. A police spokesperson was clear in stating that their involvement was to focus on “maintaining the safety of the public” during this privately organized event. The police reported that disruption to local roads was minimal, yet they did seize one vehicle for being uninsured.

Clarkson’s pub, previously called The Windmill, came under his ownership last year, adding to his business projecfts, which also includes Diddly Squat Farm. This farm gained attention through the Amazon Prime series “Clarkson’s Farm,” bringing more focus and visitors to local ventures like The Farmer’s Dog.

The pub has seen its share of public interest since its opening to the public in August, drawing significant crowds, evidenced by queues on its inaugural day. However, its location along the busy A40 means regular traffic concerns, a situation further intensified by the racing event.

Despite the races not being illegal, officers ensured public safety amid potential risks. When The Farmer’s Dog opened, Oxfordshire County Council had worked with Clarkson’s team to handle expected traffic.

Since his association with the venue, Jeremy Clarkson has faced challenges beyond this unexpected clampdown. While many in the community enjoy the novelty and boost from his celebrity presence, others express concerns over traffic congestion, particularly with events like the recent races. In previous council communications, Councillor Liam Walker highlighted the difficulty police face in stopping these events when road laws are violated, reaffirming community safety as their priority mission.

For Jeremy Clarkson, the pub’s journey so far has been mixed. He admitted facing sizeable challenges, like reported thefts, which have marked the enterprise a “disaster” on occasions. Yet, the connection with Diddly Squat Farm and the accompanying television exposure suggest optimism persists despite operational issues.
