Jeremy Clarkson “Got The Kicking He Deserved” According To British Comedian
Comedian Bill Bailey has commented on Jeremy Clarkson’s controversial Meghan Markle column, which has since been removed from The Sun.
The Grand Tour host received a huge amount of backlash after his column was published on The Sun where he said he “hated Meghan Markle on a cellular level” and that he “dreams of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”
Bailey has commented on the drama whilst speaking with The Telegraph, saying:
“You might [make a comment like Clarkson’s] in the pub as a clumsy, oafish sort of laugh. But you put it in print and not only does it take on another life but it gives gravitas to something that should never have had it.
“You think, ‘Come on, you’ve got to be more savvy than that, surely you can see how that’s going to pan out’, it was misguided and ill-conceived and he got the kicking he deserved.”
The former Top Gear host posted to Twitter that he “put his foot in it” and that his comments were a “clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones” and that it “went down badly”. Clarkson asked The Sun to remove the column which they did and they apologised for publishing it.
A spokesperson for Meghan Markle has commented in a statement:
“The fact that The Sun has not contacted The Duchess of Sussex to apologise shows their intent, this is nothing more than a PR stunt.
“While the public absolutely deserves the publication’s regrets for their dangerous comments, we wouldn’t be in this situation if The Sun did not continue to profit off of and exploit hate, violence and misogyny. A true apology would be a shift in their coverage and ethical standards for all. Unfortunately, we’re not holding our breath.”
