The Carapace Superyacht Concept Will Transform Into A Submarine

Luxury yachts have all the latest tech, so how do you bring something new to the industry? How does a yacht that turns into a submarine sound? This James Bond-esque boat called the Carapace by the Italian naval architect, Elena Nappi, is only a concept for now, but here’s everything you need to know about the futuristic ship.

Thanks to a diesel-electric fuel cell system and a lightweight structure made from aluminium, the Carapace has a maximum speed of 18mph on top of the water and will reach 2,400 miles or range. Underwater, it can submerge to a depth of 985 feet for a maximum of ten days at a time and can reach 14mph.

“The world of luxury submarines is one of the last frontiers in the field of experimentation, and perhaps the hybrid will be the language of the future,” Nappi said in regards to the hybrid propulsion system in a statement to CNN.

“Very often yacht owners are looking for original solutions to be able to offer their friends and their family something special, and certainly that of a diving cruise of this type is something unprecedented in the superyacht market.”

This three-deck craft remains a concept for now, but its renderings show a host of luxury creature comforts such as a lounge, a spa and jacuzzi, a bar and a health club, plus high-class rooms for passengers with only the best views of the sea around them.

Of course, you’d expect to pay millions for this level of technology and luxury, but there’s been no release of a price just yet. Unfortunately on top of this, Nappi expects to wait a long time for this ship to be anywhere need feasible by comparing his efforts to the long time it’s taking EV cars to grow into the car market.

“If we make a comparison with the automotive sector, it is not hard to understand that the road to this type of boat is still very far away,” she said. “The first electric car was built in 1884 and is only on the market today, so it is impossible to think that a harness like this could be put on the market before 100 years.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
