The Grand Tour

Watch Jeremy Clarkson Play Gadget Pub Games With Stephen Fry

Perhaps you, like me, have been spending a large portion of your social-distancing time glued to Youtube. Chances are, you’ve also been jonesing for some new Grand Tour episodes, and to satisfy your cravings, have been revisiting some of the classic moments from our favorite hosts’ BBC days.

Enter this classic clip from Stephen Fry’s fantastic electronics show, Gadget Man, where he challenges Jeremy Clarkson to a series of high-tech pub games. Naturally, they begin with a demonstration from a robotic bartender, which can make 100s of precise combinations from a series of pre-programed recipes.

It’s pretty interesting to see which of these gadgets, filmed in 2012, stand the test of time. For instance, the PECOMIX, which after some research I found stands for “PErfect COcktail Mixer”, can no longer be found for sale. Of course few of us have bought glassesless 3D TVs either, and that too seemed to suffer a failure to launch.

It’s great how “cheater” Clarkson immediately takes advantage of the design flaw with smartphone-to-tablet darts, albeit I was surprised that technology actually seemed to work well enough to play. The darts definitely wasn’t as polished as the augmented-reality billiards table, designed with help from Queens University in Canada.

What do you think would have been your prize choice for this drunken tourney? One could have seen Clarkson’s pick coming from a mile away!
