Alpine Reveals Alpenglow: A Hydrogen-powered Hypercar Of The Future

Alpine has always been at the forefront of gear heads’ minds when it comes to the ultimate drivers’ car. The A110 was the lightweight remedy the industry needed since its release in 2017, and has only recently been updated with am ‘R’ version, and following this an ‘Alonso’ edition to reflect the company’s F1 connection.

But now, the company’s released something new and very, very interesting. It’s called the Alpenglow, and this concept car shows us what the future of the company could look like. We’ll see it in person at the Paris Motor show next week where it will be shown off in the metal for the first time, but until then, let’s have a quick look at what this brings.

The concept is low and wide, and reminds me of a Gran Turismo concept car. And while specific details haven’t been revealed, the lightweight focus of the A110 has continued into this design through the use of recycled carbon.

The engine is even more interesting, with it running on hydrogen over a standard fuel, showing us that the French company is interested in developing this carbon-neutral technology. This hydrogen is stored in two tanks that sit at 700 bar and while it produces “riveting engine roars”, it produces “practically nothing besides steam”.

Look outside of this powertrain and the body is just as enticing, featuring a transparent active wing, transparent sections on its bonnet, and transparent panels over where the hydrogen tanks are stored. This design language is reflected inside the cockpit, too, and its gorgeous lighting front and back will be kept for future models within the brand, as well, spelling a slightly different design language going forward.

It’s a big vehicle with a length of over 5 metres and a width over 2 metres, but sits incredibly low in comparison with a height of only one metre. Alpine calls this “a dream car’s proportions”, and I’m not arguing.

Unfortunately, Alpine doesn’t have plans to put hydrogen-powered engines in their cars for the time being, but is instead planning an all-electric future starting in 2025 that will boast three new EVs. This includes a modern Renault 5 hot hatch, a GT X-Over crossover, and an all-new sports car that will replace the beloved A110.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
