Audi Readying Project One And Valkyrie Slayer

It looks like Audi is finally ready to enter the hypercar game, as the boss of Audi Sport, Stephan Winkelmann, made some revealing comments at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week.

In an interview with Topgear.com, Winkelmann mentioned that he had “people” working on a hypercar to rival the Mercedes-AMG Project One and the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Of course, the answer isn’t as clear cut as “Yes we are for sure 100000% building one and here’s what it will have,” but of more of your typical corporate vagueness:

“In my opinion yes, it’s clear that we have developed the R8 completely – but it’s a very young car with a long life cycle, we will have derivatives. And then we have to enlarge our product portfolio.

We will go from 11 to 16 cars in the next three years, this is a major effort but the halo car, the repositioning car, is something my people are thinking about. I have my ideas, they have theirs, we have to see when there is enough space to do something like this. But to be sure this brand deserves something like this.”

So at this point, who knows what’s in store for Audi’s planned hypercar? All we really know is that there is one planned, but beyond that is anyone’s guess. Despite Audi’s claims otherwise, I’m betting on a hybrid powertrain as opposed to an all electric or gasoline (tradition gasoline engines just don’t seem to be the thing in hypercars anymore).

I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
