We’re coming in hot with the latest edition of ‘idiots in cars during the COVID-19 pandemic’ and this one is quite the story.
It all started on a Monday morning in Snohomish County in Washington when police clocked a man in a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette speeding at an absolutely massive 192 miles per hour.
According to the Twitter account called Trooper Heather Axtman, an officer first saw the speeding drivers Corvette on the US 2 at around 7:45am on Sunday – with the officer clocking the Corvette’s speed at just shy of 200mph. Suffice to say this is over triple the 60 mph speed limit and is obviously, pretty darn dangerous.
At 7:45 this morning, Trooper Willard was monitoring traffic speed on US2 near SR9 when he observed a Corvette traveling 192MPH! The 31 year old Corvette driver exited to SR9 and was caught near 96th Dr Se. He was arrested for Reckless & DUI! #drivesober #yourWSP

The Corvette then proceeded to exit the highway onto the Washington State Route 9 and was pulled over a short time later. When questioned by the officer as to why the driver was going so fast he exclaimed that he was ‘on his way to breakfast’ – however we can only imagine he didn’t manage to get to his favourite breakfast stop and was served a big steaming pile of justice instead. The man was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Drive, interviewed Trooper Axtman about the incident and was told that the car in question was a 2008 silver Corvette, but the exact model is not yet known but we do believe that the vehicle did not have any modifications which narrows down the options quite significantly.
We understand the Corvette in question was either the Z06 or the ZR1 but given the rarity of the ZR1 these days, we would hedge our bets on the Z06. Both models are capable of reaching 192 mph, with the Z06 using a massive 7.0 litre V8 to provide your right foot with 505 horsepower, whereas the ZR1 contains a supercharged 6.2 litre V8 that delivers a massive 638 horses.
At the end of the day, any top level Corvette from the past 15 years would easily be able to hit the kind of speeds this guy was driving, but we certainly wouldn’t recommend it and we certainly wouldn’t recommend doing it under the influence of alcohol either.
In the wake of a global lockdown due to COVID-19, the empty roads may seem exceptionally tempting to test out your cars capabilities but the police are still on the lookout for people speeding and while going 192mph in a 60mph zone would come with a pretty hefty punishment, disobeying lockdown orders will make the case a lot more serious.
