Ford Has Produced An All-Electric Mustang And It’s Exactly What We Want

While we wait for the all new Mustang-based all-electric SUV, Ford has been quietly working behind the scenes with Webasto to surprise us with an all-electric Mustang sports car. It’s not just inspired by the Mustang, it’s a through-and-through Pony car but with an electric heart called the Mustang Lithium prototype.

The thing is, and this may be shocking to some of you, we’re not complaining. While it may be an EV, it produces 900 horsepower, which is sent through a 6-speed manual gearbox. If electric cars are really the future, and we’re damn sure they are, then this is the way we want them. Thank you, Ford.

Under the bonnet where you’d usually find the 5.0-litre V8 sits a Phi-Power dual-core electric motor with dual power inverters. I’m not sure what that means either, but with an 800-volt Webasto battery system, it can discharge a megawatt of power. In layman’s terms, this means the car can have a lighter single motor that generates less heat while still producing plenty of performance. This is a very good thing.

But this performance needs to make it to the road, so a Getrag MT82 has been strengthened to take 1,000lb-ft of torque, and a Super 8.8 Torsen differential with half shafts from Ford Performance have been used to to enable the motors to cook the rear tyres. To manage the extra movement this car will undeniably undergo, Ford has added the Ford Performance Track Handling Package, strut tower brace, and six-piston Brembos from the Shelby GT350, and to reflect its performance, it’s been given an eye-catching body kit with hints of carbon fibre and electrification.

I think it’s safe to say, electric cars are safe in the hands of Ford. I didn’t ever expect to say that.
