2022 Mazda 6 Will Have Inline-6 and RWD Powertrain

If you’ve been tantalized by the recent Mazda Vision Concept but are sceptical about the manufacturer’s real-world prospects, well now is your time to relax. Apparently, many of the design decisions from the Vision are slated to appear in the production 2022 Mazda 6. Supposedly, a longitudinal-engine platform with rear-wheel drive and an inline-six will propel the company’s venture into a higher-end market.

Mazda, with its Skyactiv-X compression-ignition technology and 48-volt hybrid system, has been working in conjunction with Lexus to develop prospective engines for the Mazda 6. Tentatively, Lexus may also use these technologies in their IS and RC range of sedans. If anyone has ever driven in an Infinity hybrid, like the Q50, they can only imagine the combination of Mazda’s novel combustion technologies with the added zip of an electric motor at the onset. Something tells me that these luxury sedans from Infiniti are exactly the kind of vehicle Mazda has in its sights for the 6’s reboot, albeit with a much lower price tag.

The long hood and signature silhouette of the RWD/ Inline-six design language will make a much more elegant vehicle out of the range. There is still speculation around whether or not Mazda will use the same engine for both its two and four-door sedans. One would think they should go big or go home, and that a long-spanning front end would be the ideal shape of Mazda’s future.
