This Mazda MX-5 Miata Shooting Brake Is Exactly What We Need
The Mazda MX5 has been one of the most complimented cars in the history of, well… cars. But while they are beloved within the motoring world, there’s always been one part of the car that lets it down for some who aren’t so in love. Not everyone loves the fact it’s a convertible.
Chris Harris has stated that it makes the car feel less rigid, and it’s no secret that the car is known to be a hair dresser’s go-to Roadster. In response to this, Mazda released an RF version of the car with a rigid roof that could still fold down into its boot. But this still wasn’t enough for digital renderer Sugar Chow, who has created what he deems to be the perfect MX-5.
This shooting brake is reminiscent of the BMW Z3 M ‘Clown shoe’, which won the hearts of many of us.
The floor of the MX-5 remains the same, but the top half takes on a whole new design with the A-pillars now reaching back to the rear of the car to support the new roof. It slowly slopes as it reaches the rear, and the C-pillars are now much fuller, putting the emphasis on the rear of the car instead of the long bonnet.
I highly doubt this new rear will house any more than the original two seats, but there’s now plenty of storage space, and I’m loving the added utility.
The rear of the car holds a close resemblance to the Mazda 3 with a narrow window and a stubby wiper. But this rear hatch sports more angular body lines which fit very nicely, as does the new spoiler and quad exhaust exits.
It would be amazing if Mazda followed suit with a similar design, but it’s highly unlikely they’d do such a thing with this type of vehicle being so niche. Although it would pose as a brilliant and cheap alternative to the original clown shoe.
