A 400bhp Toyota Supra GRMN could be on its way later this year

We’ve already been introduced to a faster and more powerful Supra when Toyota revealed its 3000GT Concept during the 2019 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Taking inspiration from the Supra TRD3000GT, it was producing 395bhp and featured a host of exterior modifications making it look as good as it performed. Now, a rumour from Best Car Web states that the Japanese marque could be putting this car (or something very similar) on the market later this year.

Not only would its 3.0-litre inline-6 receive a boost in power over the stock 335hp and 365lb-ft of torque, but its body would be treated to a selection of carbon fibre additions to make it look the part and lower its overall weight. It would feature a stiffer chassis, improved suspension components, and more downforce, but don’t think you’re getting it for free, as these upgrades will be accompanied by a price hike. £52,695 will currently get you the Premium Supra, so I’d expect anything over £60,000 minimum for something a bit hotter.

Tetsuya Tada, Toyota’s chief engineer in charge of the Supra project, has ensured that each year a new variant of the car will be introduced. With it first being revealed in 2019 for a release during 2020, we expect more details to arrive later this year on this higher performance model. Unfortunately, Tada also explained that due to budget restraints, this new Supra is highly unlikely to get a manual gearbox, but this could change in the future.

The Supra has been built for the aftermarket industry, so it shouldn’t be difficult for the marque to unleash more of the car’s potential, especially when it’s so obvious that Toyota is withholding a lot of the car’s performance. The company’s own GT4 racing car boasts 429bhp from the same engine, so let’s hope we get access to some of that on the road in the near future.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
