Leak: New Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ Coming July 2021

According to reports, the new Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ will be launched in July 2021. The GT86 will be changing its name to GR86 to match Toyota’s new Gazoo Racing branding, and both cars will reportedly be powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer engine from Subaru.

A photo from an insider has been found revealing this launch date, allegedly confirming that the new Japanese sports car will have its launch within 18 months for the 2020 model year. We assume, like last time, that the Subaru BRZ sister car will launch at the same time.

We know that both cars will be based on Toyota’s TNGA chassis, but the powertrain will come from Subaru in the form of a 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer engine. Currently found in the Legacy, Outback, and Ascent, it produces 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque, but we’re sure thanks to how easy it is to squeeze more power out of a forced induction setup, we could be looking at higher figures in the sports cars.

New Turbo Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ On The Way With 255BHP And New Name

With the new Toyota Supra currently stealing headlines at the moment with its new 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant, it will be interesting to see how Toyota slots together its portfolio of cars while keeping enough variation between the Supra and GR86 models. We assume that the main difference will stem from the different gearboxes used. The Supra is currently only available with a ZF 8-speed automatic, and the current GT86 is available with a 6-speed manual. We expect this trend to continue.
