Subaru Has Crushed Our Dreams Of A Faster Subaru BRZ

I recently discussed Subaru’s teaser of what we expected to be a faster, more racey version of the BRZ. A car worthy of its potential STI badge. Judging from the latest from Subaru’s social media, I was, unfortunately, wrong.

From what they said on Twitter, “Tune in tomorrow for more Subaru Tecnica International goodness. #BRZtS #STI”, it looks as though they are bringing the BZT tS to the North American market. So yes, that means no turbo, and no increase in power.

This model has already been released in Japan, being given only relatively modest handling upgrades. Bigger brakes, better suspension, and an upgrade from the Prius tyres these cars usually come equipped with, for example.

From the comments on my last BRZ related article, it seems as though a lot of current BRZ and GT86 owners aren’t after more power, anyway, so this may not bother you, but to me, the idea of such a well-balanced car, but this time with a little more power, was too good to reject.

What we can look forward to, though (although not me, only you lucky Americans!) is a well sorted BRZ that doesn’t lose the essence of what the car was supposed to stand for in the first place. It will have its talents enhanced, hopefully upping its ‘fun-factor’ even further, and its ability to pivot under the fingertips of the driver improved.

It will, however, still remain in the ‘not for the drag strip’ category alongside the MX5. But is that a bad thing? When there’s such aftermarket support for the BRZ from every corner of the globe, who cares?

He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: alex@grandtournation.com
