Toyota Is The Most Searched For Car Brand
Toyota has, for the second year running, remained the most searched car brand according to our friends over at Compare the Market and their Google Trends data, which says that the Japanese marque beat the competition in 47 of the 154 countries analysed. Despite this, however, overall searches for the brand have decreased by about 35% since 2020 as other companies such as BMW and Mercedes gain ground.
2019 saw BMW hit the top spot in a surprising 118 countries, which has meant the German manufacturer is still the most searched car brand across a four-year average despite sitting in second place this year. But Mercedes, sitting in third position, is closing the gap between it and BMW by almost 70%, being only 6 countries behind BMW. The year before saw it being 19 countries behind.
Audi more than doubled the countries where it was the top search going from 5th to 11th in 2021 meaning it now sits 4th most searched in the world. And interestingly, Tesla, which you’d expect to be highly searched for, only sat at the top of 5 countries: China, Hong Kong, Israel, Macao and Singapore. It did, however, sit in the top 3 of searches in 24 countries.
On the wrong end of the analysis, Ford, Nissan, and Peugeot came lower in the list. Ford, for example, dropped from 5th place in 2020 to just 9th.
So, what’s the reason behind Toyota’s success this year? Well, I’d expect it’s the introduction of a number of really interesting sports cars branded with the Toyota Gazoo Racing badge. Not only did the new GR Supra capture some of the love of its predecessor, but the rally homologation GR Yaris settled itself at the top of many ‘best car’ lists. On top of this, rumours about a potentially new Toyota MR2 must have generated a large amount of Google interest.
This, on top of Toyota’s reveal of a number of new EVs, has set up the company for a very good 2022.
