Toyota To Make Their Own Hypercar
With the historical Le Mans win under Toyota’s belt and with the recent news that the WEC’s top prototype cars will resemble hypercars, Toyota has plucked up the courage to build their own hypercar – a car which will go straight into battle with the Aston Martin Valkyrie and AMG Project ONE. And as Toyota was ostensibly responsible for the Lexus LFA, it’s time to get seriously excited.
Technology for the car will trickle straight from the Le Mans winning TS050 and will more than likely sit in a shape much like the GR Super Sport concept that they revealed last night (shown above). This concept produced almost 1,000hp using a 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine combined with electric motors. That’s enough to put the Valkyrie on edge, but maybe not surpass it. It will all come down to the final weight figure, and of course, the aero.
And of course that race winning technology will come into play. Speaking of…
“Competing in the WEC and racing at Le Mans helps us to advance the development of our world-leading hybrid electric technology and enables us to transfer the knowledge we gain to our production cars,” Toyota Gazoo Racing boss Shigeki Tomoyama explains.
“We started this project because we believe that creating a super sports car that delivers the same appeal as the TS050 Hybrid greatly adds to Toyota’s involvement in the WEC,” he adds. “And at some point in the future, customers will have a chance to get behind the wheel of this incredible machine and experience its astonishing power and driving performance.”
With the Yaris GRMN (another of Gazoo’s creations) already coming under great praise for its hot hatch-ability, this Toyota hypercar could make incredible changes to how we perceive Toyota as a marque. Next though, is surely the new Supra?
