Volkswagen Is The Best Selling Car Company In The UK

Volkswagen is officially the best selling car company in the UK as of 2021 according to figures released by the Society Of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). 147,826 cars were registered last year in total, putting the German marque at the top of the list for the first time ever. Its total sales accounted for almost 9% of the total new car market.

There are a number of reasons behind this increase in performance, mainly stemming from the Polo hatchback which was the UK’s fifth best-selling car of the year with the Golf trailing in close behind. VW has been shovelling effort into its line of EVs, too, and this has paid off with the ID.3 being named ‘the Electric People’s Car’, adding nicely to the year’s sales as one of the best-selling EVs on the market.

The VW range, aided by the fact it shares chassis with many other cars under the VW Group such as Seat and Skoda, means it has a model in almost every segment of the market from hot hatch to premium SUV. The T-Cross and Touareg SUVs for example sit at the top of this foodchain witih them both being very popular cars of this segment.

With heavy investment into VW’s MEG modular all-electric platform, it’s likely VW will remain at the top of the lest of best sellers as more EVs come to market, with the ID.4 SUV now open for orders and the crossover ID.5 coming sometime after 2022.

Rod McLeod, Director of Volkswagen UK, said the following on this success:

“What a way to start the new year – as the UK’s biggest-selling car brand across 2021. It’s a great achievement from all at Volkswagen UK, including from our fantastic network partners, as well as a clear reflection and ringing endorsement of the strength of our range offering.

“With a growing family of award-winning ID. models bolstering an already impressive range of class-leading products, it is an incredibly exciting time to be part of the UK’s most popular car brand.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
