Mustang Shelby GT500 Pitted Against Ford GT In Drag Race

The new Ford Mustang GT500 is slowly getting rolled out to customers throughout America, so it’s only natural that they’re beginning to pop up in videos on YouTube. But to get a good idea of how this new muscle car puts its power down on the street, DragTimes are here to show us exactly how it compares to the new Ford GT.

This video takes place at a quiet industrial park, not a track, so while we can’t condone this driving, at least it’s not on a busy highway. The black SUV accompanying the team seems to be on the lookout for any public, so they’re taking this seriously.

They’ve managed to get their hands on two GT500s. One is stock, and one is very lightly modified, and after warming the cars up, they’re pushing them hard. Quickly, a few teething issues arise.

Launch Control doesn’t work if the traction control isn’t activated, but for some reason, traction control seems to make the car bog down on a hard launch. Perhaps this is due to cool tyres or a low traction road, so we’ll have to see what it’s like on the drag before we make any more assumptions.

They play around with the launching RPM to produce the most efficient pull, and while it is incredibly fast with a 0-60mph time of a recorded 3.59 seconds, it’s not fast enough to take on the GT. The tuned version does however get closer to rivalling the Ford GT supercar.

Next on the agenda for the GT500 owner is to replace the supercharger pulley for more power and to remove the catalytic converters. This should mean a nice increase in power accompanied by one hell of a sound.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
