Next Subaru WRX STI will Produce 400hp from a 2.4-Litre Boxer Engine

Information from “sources close to the Japanese automaker” explain that Subaru is looking to power its new WRX STI with a turbocharged 2.4-litre boxer engine that’s good for 400 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque, according to Forbes

The new model, which will be revealed next year, is looking to have the same powerplant as the Ascent, Outback and Legacy where it produces only 240 hp. This engine is also coined for use in the new Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ. With this information in mind, it’s therefore likely that it will have revised internals that are capable of producing almost double its current power output under higher boost levels. This power is likely to be shoved through an AWD system.

The same sources have stated that Subaru engineers will be using the Mercedes-AMG M139 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as a benchmark for this new powerplant due to its success in the current A45 and CLA 45. In these popular vehicles, it produces 416 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in its top-spec.

Subaru is adopting the styling of its 2017 Viziv Performance Concept (pictured above) for this new performance car, which features much sharper lines and a more aggressive fascia compared to the current model year. It also features a more coupe-like profile with only two doors and a sloping rear roofline.

The WRX is likely to debut later this year with the STI performance variant officially hitting headlines early the following year. There are still rumours of it featuring a Toyota chassis, but more news will be revealed closer to the time of its release.
