Our Prayers Might Be Answered With This BRZ STI Teaser

It looks like Subaru have some exciting news in-store for all of us who didn’t think the BRZ/GT86 was enough bang for its buck.

Above is all we know so far about the new and awaiting BRZ STI – an STI badge printed onto the side of a large ‘sod-off’ wing that has been smacked down onto the boot of a Subaru BRZ. That’s what I like to see.

Subaru has told us that the official announcement will be on the 8th of next month (June), but until then, we will have to make do and swoon over the concept the Japanese brand revealed to us a couple of years ago at the New York Motor Show (shown below).

So what should we expect? Well, the concept had a plethora of tuning upgrades, including, and possibly the best bit being the removal of the 2.0-litre boxer engine, and the insertion of a turbo’d EJ20 in its place. This gave it a ridiculous 450hp.

Subaru’s Dominick Infante told Top Gear Magazine, “they quote it lower on the stand, but that’s just an agreement between the Japanese manufacturers.

“In the race series they downgrade their power, but in reality – in this concept car – that engine makes 450.”

The power is fed through a strengthened six-speed, straight to the rear wheels.

The chassis was also outfitted with a number of upgrades from Brembo brakes to STI suspension – and let’s not forget that wing. Oh the wing. How I have missed Need for Speed style wings…

We can certainly expect the BRZ to have its handling tuned to within an inch of its life, but is it realistic to expect 450 horses from the factory? I’d like to think so, but no, I highly doubt it.

I’m very excited to see what comes of this little teaser, and it’s safe to say that as soon as this car is available, I’d like to get my hands on it or a little test drive or two.

What would you like to see from the BRZ STI? Let me know in the comments below!

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
