The SSC Tuatara recently destroyed the record for the fastest production car, reaching a whopping 331mph with an average two-way top speed of 313.12mph. The record previously held by the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport unofficially, and officially the Koenigsegg Agera RS.
The Chiron attempt was shattered by a staggering 27mph! Shelby SuperCars has seemingly achieved what no other auto-manufacturer could, knocking Bugatti off the top of the podium for the world’s fastest production car. Not to mention they did it with half as many cylinders as the legendary Chiron.
The Tuatara’s state of the art twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8 is the powerhouse behind this car’s epic looking body, churning out a staggering 1,750 horsepower. It’s perfectly crafted aero-dynamic body is the product of over 10 years of research and development to achieve numbers that no other production car has ever before. This allows it to cut through the air and not up in the air when doing speeds of over 330mph. SSC says the Tuatara’s aero-dynamics take after a fighter jet, and you can see why. There are various winglets attached to the car to achieve the massive amounts of downforce needed to keep this car planted on the ground at high speed.
There are few places in the world where you can actually max this car out. Not only that but you need perfect conditions to achieve such high speeds. like low moisture in the air, the correct barometric pressure, wind, and obviously… no rain. The Tuatara ate up the 7 mile stretch of closed road in Nevada, where it set the record, in just a few seconds, so you really have to be careful when you floor this thing!
Oliver Web, the record-setting race car driver, said he felt like the car still had a lot more to give. The Tuatara climbed from 311 to 331 MPH in just five seconds before he let off. Could we be seeing 400mph road cars in the near future?
