The Audi RS6 GTO Concept Is Everything We Want From A Super Wagon
Wait, what’s happened to Audi and where do I get in on some of this? Welcome, ladies and gents, to the Audi RS6 GTO, the marque’s latest step towards total anarchy and, damn do we love it.
This tremendous looking concept car harks back to the legendary 90 Quattro IMSA GTO with its bold livery and solid white wheels. And while you may think a famous German designer could be behind this project, it was actually twelve third-year apprentices from Audi Sport’s Neckarsulm base who did it partly for fun of it, but mainly to celebrate the automaker’s 40 years of Quattro, Audi’s own four-wheel drive powertrain technology.
Like the racecar, it boasts a side-exit exhaust and a digitalised, white, black, and red livery. The interior has also been sculpted with high performance in mind, with skeletal racing seats at the front and nothing but a roll cage and harness bars where the rear seats used to reside. There’s no doubt that if this car was real, it would match its old racing car kin with a 700 horsepower output, despite the current RS6 already producing 590 horsepower to its four wheels.
The 90 Quattro IMSA GTO was a potent, but short lived car, with only one year to its name: 1989. It was powered by a 2.2-litre five-cylinder – yes, that’s the one that sounds so great. Accompanied by a 6-speed manual ‘box, it was able to propel itself to 62mph in just 3.1 seconds. Keeping the throttle to the floor would eventually see the car topping out at 193mph. While it won 7 of the 13 races of the 1989 IMSA season, it retired while Roush Racing claimed the title.
