The Legendary 2020 Geneva Motor Show Is Cancelled Due To Coronovirus

The 2020 Geneva Motor Show has been cancelled after the Swiss government bans all public gatherings of over 1,000 people. It was announced Friday morning, with the ban lasting untill March at a minimum as countries try to tackle the virus outbreak.

This isn’t a surprise as motor companies and journalist have been cancelling before this official statement was made for fears of not only contracting the virus, but being financially affected by the possible two-week quarantine. Now car companies will have to provide the same press reveals via digital applications.

While this sounds like a boring, but easier way to get around this issue, there are bigger problems this could produce. If companies believe that they can get the same press coverage without needing to show up at Geneva, why would they spend the money in the future? With no 2020 Geneva Show planned whatsoever now, could this spell the end of the legendary show? Who knows.

“We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors’ top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision,” said Maurice Turrettini, Chairman of the Foundation Board.

The show floor will be dismantled, but the financial consequences are yet to be confirmed, however we’re sure insurance will cover any loss.
