Italdesign was the company that designed the original, legendary DeLorean DMC-12 that became famous from films such as Back to The Future and the company’s owner’s shenanigans. But now the company is teasing the upcoming revival of the iconic car with a brief but exciting video. With the car being uncovered completely later this year, this is the first step in its eventual release.
It’s a dark teaser, but you can very obviously see the gullwing doors of the car open with a V being accentuated by graphics overlaid on top of the video. A similarly shaped V is also hinted at on what we’d expect to be the grille of the car.
But what’s behind this grille is currently a mystery.
The original DeLorean was a rear-engined vehicle, producing 130 horsepower and 153 lb-ft of torque from its NA 2.85-litre V6. While we don’t know what will be powering the new car, the company talks about its “journey to electrification”, so we assume it will be an all-electric powertrain, or possibly a hybrid system.
Last year we were given a teaser image from Italdesign which showed us the DMC logo on the front of the car. This has now been removed from the video. The car also looks a bit smoother than the original, likely for the aerodynamic benefit, and the shape of the doors are much more curvaceous.
Italdesign founder Giorgetto Giugiaro has plenty of gorgeous cars to his name including the Lotus Esprit and Maserati Bora, and even the first-gen VW Scirocco. So we’re expecting the new DeLorean to be wedge-shaped and hopefully styled with its retro competitors in mind.
But with the original DeLorean failing to become anything close to a successful car, will this new car make up for its questionable past?
