Toyota Supra Gets More Power And Performance With A91 Special Edition
It was only August, 2019 when the chief engineer behind the Toyota Supra, Tetsuya Tada, said that a new variant of the Japanese sports car would be released each year. This year, Toyota has pushed the chassis even further. We attended the press conference where they officially revealed two new road cars, plus the company’s new GT4 racecar.
This is the A91 Edition, and while it features a host of new carbon fibre exterior trim such as a new spoiler and mirror caps, the main difference is the power. This, and all 2021 6-cylinder models, will have an increase in power of 47bhp, bringing it to a total of 382 horses of Japanese power putting it in line with the Z4 M40i. This increase in potency results in a 0-60mph time of 3.9 seconds. The suspension has been tuned, too, with higher performance track-use in mind.
This special edition will be available as a limited run of only 1,000 units and will come in two colours: Nocturnal Black, and Refraction Blue. Matte black wheels will also be available. Inside, you’ll be met with a black Alcantara and leather-trimmed interior contrasted with blue. An 8.8-inch infotainment screen will also be found in all new 2021 Supras.
Alongside this new A91 Edition, they’re introducing the GR Supra 2.0. This will feature a turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine with 255hp and 295ft lbs of torque. Thanks to the lower weight of the engine, it boasts a 50:50 weight distribution front to back, and 0-60mph comes in at 5 seconds flat.
At the end of the press conference, the GT4 race car was revealed. With a host of aerodynamic upgrades across its exterior such as a large wing and front diffuser, this car is ready to win some races. Power output is 430hp and it weighs less than 3,000lbs. It is due to race in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series, possibly as early as next year. This car costs just below $200,000 but is only for race teams, I’m afraid, however much we’d like to see it on the road.
