F1 Breaking: Alex Albon Suffered Respiratory Failure During Appendix Surgery

Nyck de Vries showed us exactly what he is capable of behind the wheel of an F1 car this weekend during the Italian Grand Prix. But while we were excited to see de Vries on-track, Alex Albon was undergoing surgery to remove his appendix. Now his team, Williams, has revealed that he has suffered respiratory failure – a rare but possible side effect of this surgery.

Albon was practicing at Monza on the Friday of the Italian GP, but Saturday saw him falling ill and de Vries taking his place. But during the surgery, he suffered “known but uncommon” complication.

Williams released the following:

“Further to Alex Albon’s diagnosis of appendicitis on the morning of Saturday 10 September, he was admitted to San Gerardo hospital for treatment. He underwent a successful laparoscopic surgery on Saturday lunchtime.

“Following surgery, Alex suffered with unexpected post-operative anaesthetic complications which led to respiratory failure, a known but uncommon complication. He was re-intubated and transferred to intensive care for support.”

We wish him the best and will be looking forward to him getting back in the seat of his Williams.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
