F1 News: Mick Schumacher Claims His Place in Mercedes – “We Will Be Able To Fight for the World Championships”

The news of Mick Schumacher joining the Mercedes team for the 2023 Formula 1 season has generated a lot of buzz among fans and industry professionals. As the son of the legendary Michael Schumacher, there is no doubt that Mick has big shoes to fill. However, he has proven himself to be a talented driver in his own right, having competed in the F1 for two seasons with Haas before being dropped from the team late in the season. This left him with limited options for the 2023 season, making his invitation to join Mercedes as a reserve driver for George Russell and Lewis Hamilton a fortunate opportunity.

In his first interview with the team, Schumacher expressed his excitement at joining such a successful and respected organization.

“I saw the development the W13 has been through this year and the steps it had taken over the course of the year from a difficult start to a race-winning car,” he said.

“So definitely excited about next year to see what is possible.

“Hopefully I will be able to contribute a good amount to it and we will be able to fight for the world championships at the end of the year.”

One aspect that sets Schumacher apart from many of his peers is his full understanding of the current technology and development of the 2023 (ground effect) cars. He has a full season of experience with these new regulations, which gives him a solid foundation to build upon as he works with the team to optimize the performance of the upcoming W14. It’s clear that Schumacher is eager to prove himself and make a mark in the F1 world, and with his involvement with Mercedes – a team with a reputation for pushing the boundaries of innovation – it’s likely that he will have many opportunities to do so.

“I guess it is not as common to have a reserve driver that has been driving the same era of cars,” he says.

“I know the tyres, I know what the car is about, what it needs in terms of driving style so hopefully I will be able to contribute to that but also maybe see what the drivers need from the outside.

“The simulator work is going to be very important. We have a lot to do so hopefully I will contribute the knowledge that I have but also gain knowledge for myself that hopefully, I can use for the rest of my career.”

Given his talent, determination, and the support of a top-tier team like Mercedes, it’s likely that we will see him make a strong impact in the 2023 season and beyond. Whether he takes on a drive with Mercedes or another team, Schumacher has the potential to make his mark just like his father did.
