F1 News: Red Bull Reflects On Disastrous Qualifying At Hungarian GP

The Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying did not go to plan for Red Bull this afternoon. After having lap times deleted for exceeding track limits and then reinstated again, Sergio Perez, came out in Q2 leaving him starting in 11th place tomorrow. So, all was riding on Max Verstappen in Q3 but he was only able to place 10th due to reported power issues.

Things got rather heated for Verstappen over the team radio as he was told to change some settings but he reported back that “nothing works”.

In his post race interview, Verstappen brushed off rumours of a bigger issue:

“I don’t think it’s a big issue but it’s something we couldn’t solve out on track. There was a lot of analysing going on as to what was going wrong yesterday. Car was better today for handling and this track doesn’t suit us. I still would have liked to have started in Q3, we had the pace for it, good turnaround but the little glitch makes it start tenth.

“It can be a tough one if you are stuck. We have to stay calm and wait for our moments to go forwards. It depends a bit what’s going on ahead and behind you, we just need to be on it.”

Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, commented on the team’s performance:

“Very frustrating. A lock up on the first run for Max immediately put us on the back foot but we felt confident but unfortunately a power-related issue on his out lap, it wasn’t to be so no representative time for Max in Q3. Tenth and 11th so busy race tomorrow. Congrats to George Russell, a pretty lap.

“Theoretically, I think Max was at least fourth, we could have had a shot at the front row. It’s happened today not tomorrow, we’ll race hard from there and give it everything.”
