F1 Rumour: Daniel Ricciardo Could Be Moving To Mercedes To Replace Lewis Hamilton

According to recent reports, Mercedes is looking to offer Daniel Ricciardo a role as a reserve driver as the Australian is set to leave McLaren at the end of the 2022 F1 season.

Ricciardo was due to spend at least two years at McLaren, with him exiting Renault for the opportunity after just two years with the French team. This new lineup, alongside Lando Norris, was supposed to be one of the greatest partnerships on the grid, but this hasn’t turned out to be the reality of it. Unfortunately, Ricciardo hasn’t taken to his McLaren machine, and Norris has been ahead of him on almost every turn.

The McLaren obviously doesn’t worth for the Aussie, with him showing that he potential to win races back at Renault with a win at Monza. So, with this in mind, Ricciardo’s contract was bought out by the team, and he is now looking for either a seat, or more recently, a reserve place with a team.

It was original thought that Ricciardo would move to Alpine, but Renault’s CEO Luca de Meo didn’t appreciate the way the driver left the team in 2020, and is now looking to sign Pierre Gasly who currently races for AlphaTauri.

Haas was also rumoured to be a future for Ricciardo, as has Alfa Romeo and AlphaTauri. Williams is also potentially open, but he likely wouldn’t want to go there.

Now, according to the Daily Mail, a source at Mercedes has admitted that they’d like to bring on Ricciardo as a reserve driver for 2023, with him potentially taking over when Lewis Hamilton retires.
