F1 News: Charles Leclerc Wants Monaco To Stay Despite Rumours Of Its Cancellation
With the Monaco Grand Prix quickly approaching this weekend, talks of the track not making it past the 2022 F1 calendar are becoming more and more prevalent. Lewis Hamilton has already stated that he believes “it’s one of the crown jewels of our sport. So I’m not really sure it would be great to lose it.
“There are good bits… I guess that the difficult part is that the racing itself is not that spectacular.”
F1 has always had a good relationship with the track, offering it an amazing deal to host a Grand Prix, but also giving it extras like the right to create its TV broadcast and to use its own sponsors – some of which compete with sponsors of the F1 itself.
Liberty Media is surely looking over the figures and wondering why this is going ahead. After all, there are plenty of tracks and locations out there who are willing to pay large amounts of money to host the F1. But Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has given his opinion on the track, assuring fans that he doesn’t want it to go anywhere.
“I think it would be a bad move for both parties now,” he confirmed. “I’ve never known Monaco without F1, apart from for COVID reasons in 2020.
“And F1 without Monaco for me is not F1. I think F1 has a history, has some historic tracks like Silverstone, like Monza, and like Monaco too, and I think they should stay in the calendar.”
A major complaint about the track is the lack of overtaking, especially with these more modern, huge, and heavy F1 cars. Leclerc reveals that he’s been thinking of ways to improve the track:
“I thought about it sometimes, whether it will improve a lot overtaking,” Leclerc continued. “I don’t know, maybe before the tunnel you can go to the left and do a big straight there. But how feasible it is?
“I’m not sure. Of course overtaking is difficult, but I think what we all love as drivers is the challenge, especially in qualifying to do that lap, just pushing.
“There’s no track that comes close to the adrenaline we get in Monaco, and for me it’s part of F1 history and should stay in F1.”
