F1 News: Drive To Survive Series Comes Under Fire From Pierre Gasly: “I Think We’ve Had Enough Drama”

The Drive to Survive series on Netflix has been rather controversial in recent times after multiple F1 drivers complained of the show’s format. The series has faced criticism from drivers as being “too dramatic”.

The latest series of the Drive to Survive highlight’s the gripping rivalry between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in the previous season. Max himself is not a fan of the format and has taken a jibe at the show by comparing it to Kim Kardashian’s show ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’.

Max Verstappen is of the opinion that the show’s format is good for gaining popularity. But, it is a bit more like “Keeping up with the Formula One World”. He thinks that it shouldn’t be that way. He is of the opinion that it would be better to make a review of the entire season and it should be done by F1 itself.

Apart from Max, Lando Norris has raised concerns about the way his relationship with McLaren team-mate Daniel Ricciardo has been portrayed. Not only the drivers, but F1 chief Stefano Domenicali has also urged the producers of Drive To Survive to avoid dramatisation going forward.

Pierre Gasly, the AlphaTauri driver has been the latest star to disapprove of the show’s format. He goes on to talk about certain scenes in the series have been ‘made up for the show’.

He talks to the GP fans via Planet F1:

“I haven’t seen the whole series, so I haven’t seen like (more than) pretty much the first two episodes.”

“You can clearly see that some scenes are kind of made up for the show. It’s difficult to speak for the drivers, I’m not in their position.”

“I don’t know how they (Netflix) get on with other guys. I think on our side with Yuki (Tsunoda), which is what I can compare, it was kind of normal.”

“But obviously as a driver, you don’t want to be portrayed differently than the person you are in reality. I think that’s the main thing that we ask for.”

He went on to say:

“On my side, I never had any issue. I never felt like they were kind of changing or adding more drama than we had”

“I think we had enough drama over the last three years. It didn’t need more.”

F1 Chief Stefano Domenicali has hinted at the seriousness of the matter by stating that discussions will be held with the teams, drivers, and eventually with Netflix. It is necessary that the story does not move away from reality otherwise it no longer fits.

“‘It is a topic that we will address together with the drivers. We have to make sure that a project that has generated such exceptional traction has a language that continues to appeal, but without distorting the image and the meaning of the sport that we live with every day.” he told Motorsport.com.
