F1 News: George Russell Takes First Ever Pole In Mercedes Comeback

George Russell has taken his first ever pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix, showing that Mercedes may just be coming back to their former glory.

Russell took pole with a time of 1:17.377, closely followed by Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc for Ferrari. In his post race interview, Russell said:

“Over the moon, absolutely buzzing, yesterday was probably our worst Friday of the season and everyone last night was working so hard, we didn’t really know what direction to go in.

“But that last lap I got round Turn One, Turn Two, and the lap times just kept on coming. I came across the line and looked at the screen and saw P1 and it was an incredible feeling.”

Without a Mercedes pole position for the whole of the 2022 season so far, Russell was asked if this was the comeback we have all been waiting for. He added:

“I don’t know to be honest we need to look and understand where that came from there’s a few ideas we had.

“But generally we had good race pace but the Ferraris looked very fast on Friday but we are going to be absolutely going for it (tomorrow), but either way that was a pretty special day no doubt.”

Reacting to the amazing result, team principal Toto Wolff said:

“The truth is we saw it from the beginning of qualifying that our tyres were in the right window and the car was balanced.

“They drove it really well then gained confidence from run to run and this was the result.

“In this moment you want to cry joy for pole position but equally you know the car was good for him (Lewis) to be there as well. Very, very bitter sweet.

“That is a solid result, we were always off the pace on a single lap and now we are on pole so let’s see what we can do tomorrow. If we have the pace then I feel like we are in the fun and games at the front again.”
