F1 News: Haas’ Guenther Steiner Slams Mercedes After “Ridiculous” Accusations

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has slammed the likes of Mercedes as his team comes under criticism for being too successful in the first few races of the 2022 F1 season.

Haas is engine partners with Ferrari, but shares a large number of parts with the team such as their suspension and gearbox. On top of this, Haas shared Ferrari’s wind tunnel and are situated very close to Ferrari’s office in Maranello. This, according to other teams, is far too much of a connection between the two teams that have shown incredible performance so far this season.

Three teams have been reported to come forward to the FIA asking for an enquiry into this, with Mercedes and its team principal Toto Wolff spearheading the move.

“I think it needs reform,” he said, “because we want to avoid these kinds of discussions that we have now, the polemic around the last few days or last few weeks.

“Everybody deserves to perform well, and people should get credit when they’ve done a good job.

“But some of the job-hopping or entity-hopping on the same premises is just creating arguments that are not necessary for the sport.”

Steiner, however, wasn’t happy with this, and slammed Mercedes with his response:

“There are sometimes things in the rules that if they don’t work for you, you cannot go and change it,” he told Metro.co.uk.

“Mercedes was winning the World Championship eight years in a row, they had a very strong engine, and good for them, they did a good job.

“But nobody said: “Oh, we now need to change the engine rule, because Mercedes is winning everything.

“There is governance in place. And if certain people think they can change everything by just speaking, I don’t think that is going to happen.”

Haas is seeing incredibly success this year with the team being 7th on the constructors standings. In fact, Kevin Magnussen is 9th in the drivers standings, 8 places ahead of his teammate Mick Schumacher.

Steiner continued, discussing the relentless onslaught from his competition:

“You know, these allegations have always existed and always will. I stay calm.

“If we are good, they call our car a ‘white Ferrari’. If we are bad, then no. I’m starting to find that ridiculous.

“You have to work hard for envy. You get pity for free. I wish the others would be green with envy because that means we did a very good job.”
