F1 News: Lewis Hamilton Admits He Could Have Won If It Wasn’t For Qualifying Issues

Lewis Hamilton has taken home yet another second place as he and Mercedes teammate George Russell get a double podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Russel began the race on pole position but didn’t quite have the pace to bring back the win. Instead, Max Verstappen had a brilliant run from P10, making this one hell of a way to end before the Summer break.

Hamilton slowly made his way up the field starting from P7 after a great start, but it was only towards the end of the race did he really find some performance. He didn’t have enough laps to catch the Red Bull driver even with a bit of rain, but he’s now admitted that if he didn’t have the DRS problem during qualifying, he could have taken his first win of 2022.

“I was struggling at the start of the race and wasn’t sure I could catch the guys up. I want to acknowledge my team that continues to push and not give up.

“For both cars to be on the podium twice is special for us. Unlucky for George. Other guys still have an edge but we’re clearly closing the gap,” Hamilton added.

“I was hoping it would rain at the end, so I could challenge Max. But we ran out of laps. Would have been a better qualifying if DRS was okay yesterday and we’d have been in the run for the win.”

There’s now a four-week break for the sport, and the Mercedes team will be going into it with optimism after an amazing last couple of races where both drivers have finished on the podium.

“This is an amazing way to go into the break. Hopefully, we bring some more in the second part of the season and start fighting with the guys at the front,” Hamilton ended.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
