F1 News: Lewis Hamilton Reacts To Potential South African Grand Prix Addition
With the F1 looking to build upon its current calendar, it’s getting closer and closer to securing a grand prix in Kyalami, South Africa. This could potentially come as early as next year. And while fans of the sport across the world are giggling with excitement, Lewis Hamilton has given his take on the news.
“The place that I really feel is dear to my heart and most important to get a race back is in South Africa,” Hamilton tells Reuters.
“There is a great following out there and I think it would be great to be able to highlight just how beautiful the motherland is.”
Following meeting the South African government delegation during the weekend of the Monaco Grand Prix, Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1, flew from Azerbaijan last weekend to the country to further enquire about a potential race there.
It would take place at the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit, a whole 29 years since it last hosted a grand prix.
If this was confirmed, there would be an F1 race in every continent on Earth.
Things are now looking very promising, with Kyalami bringing its track standard to a Grade 1 – the FIA’s standards to host an F1 race – and it’s possible that it could hold a race as soon as next year, although it could be pushed back to 2024.
The last grand prix held there was won by the legendary Alain Prost in a Williams. He was followed by Ayrton Senna in his McLaren, and in third place Ligier’s Mark Blundell.
