F1 News: Mercedes Chief Getting “Fed Up With Lewis” As Hamilton “Doesn’t Seem Bothered About Losing”

It’s no secret that Lewis Hamilton has been struggling with the Mercedes W13, despite fans of the 7-time world champion seeing his best performance of the season recently at the Canadian Grand Prix.

His Mercedes teammate George Russell hasn’t been having such bad luck, with him being consistent so far this season, never finishing a race in anything lower than P5. This has made Hamilton’s performance look a bit worrying. In fact, the fact that Russell has been able to outperform Lewis for the majority of the season so far is a shock.

Former F1 CEO Bernie Eccleston has commented on this. Although it must be noted that his opinions on F1 have often been wrong.

“I didn’t think [Russell] was that good but he has done an excellent job,” Ecclestone told the press.

“I’m surprised. Or is it a case of Lewis doing a bad job? A bit of both.

“Toto is getting a bit fed up with Lewis. I don’t think he’s trying, do you? Let’s put it another way, Lewis doesn’t seem bothered about losing.

“It’s not like him. He has a competitive nature but he’s taking losing a bit easy for my liking.

“I don’t think he is actively helping George. I don’t think he’s doing anything. I don’t think he cares too much. He’s not prepared to put the effort into winning that he did.”

Hamilton has been struggling with porpoising so far this season, with him now visually being affected by the pain it’s causing. But Ecclestone doesn’t believe it:

“All b*******,” he said in reference to the pain Hamilton’s feeling.

“George is taller and if it was going to happen to anyone it would have happened to him.

“There was a bit of Nigel Mansell about it. At least with Nigel, he would get out of the car and rub his left leg as if he had broken it. Next moment, it would be his right leg.”

Because of this, Ecclestone admits that he can see Hamilton retiring at the end of this season, with him expecting the driver to “sell his position” at Mercedes.

“Lewis might sell his position to Toto,” Ecclestone admitted.

‘”This is how much I am getting, I’ll step down and give me half of what I would get’. Toto can go and do one of his magic deals, offer someone less money and keep £20 million.

“Nobody needs to tell Toto this because he has already thought of it. Lewis would probably stop under those circumstances.

“I don’t know what he is doing dressing up in all those funny clothes. Has he a deal to it? Is it to get noticed? Maybe that’s it.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
