F1 News: Mercedes Chief Optimistic For Hungarian GP After Victorious Qualifying

Toto Wolff has been blown away by the Mercedes result at the Hungarian Grand Prix as George Russell brings in the team’s first pole position, with Hamilton in 7th due to DRS issues. After a year of disappointment, this will come as a breath of fresh air for the team. Now, the team chief believes they could be in for a win tomorrow.

Ferrari and Red Bull looked to be taking another victory between the two this weekend, but with Max Verstappen struggling with issues and Ferrari having issues with their tyres, Mercedes was able to squeeze in a cheeky pole position.

“First of all, I’m glad to be invited again here,” Toto joked. You only pick the winners. We just need to write down everything we did, including the food and drinks in order to replicate. Because we wanted to play it easy until the summer break and then interfere again…the truth is we saw it from the start of qualifying. The car was balanced and the tyres in the right window. Everything came together. George drove it well and gained confidence.

“In these moments you want to cry of joy for pole position, equally you know the car was good for him to be there as well. Bittersweet. Let’s see what we can do. if we have the pace, then we’re part of the fun and games at the front again.”

After this Saturday, Toto is feeling optimistic about Sunday’s race.

“We have a big point gap behind Max. Then they were out of the fight at the front, we will never give up. I wouldn’t discount anything if we’re able to win tomorrow,” he added.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
