F1 News: Mercedes Prove They Are Back In The Fight After Hungarian GP Success

Mercedes have had an extremely rocky start to the 2022 F1 season but with a double podium finish at the French Grand Prix last weekend and an incredible performance with another double podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, they might just be coming back to the performance we are all used to seeing from them.

George Russell bagged his first ever pole position at qualifying yesterday, had a fantastic start to the race gaining a good lead during the early stages of the race, and lead the race for 30 laps. Lewis Hamilton also had a great start gaining two places straight away.

For the majority of the races in the first half of the season there has been a big gap between Red Bull and Ferrari and the rest of the pack. However, with various reliability issues for Red Bull and some poor strategy choices for Ferrari, Mercedes have shown a consistent performance behind the front runners.

The Hungarian Grand Prix showed Mercedes being able to compete with Red Bull and Ferrari, ending up with Hamilton in second with the fastest lap and Russell ending in third place.

In his post race interview with David Coulthard, Hamilton commented on gaining on the competition:

“The other guys still have a bit of an edge but we are clearly closing the gap”

We are now heading into the summer break for the season and todays performance is going to be leaving Mercedes fans eagerly anticipating the second half of the season.
