F1 Rumours: Lewis Hamilton Pegged For 5 To 10 Year Contract With Mercedes
Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff has hinted at a long future for Lewis Hamilton in F1 as he introduces the idea that his contract will likely be renewed for a long time.
This weekend’s French Grand Prix is Hamilton’s 300th racing weekend with the sport, making him the 6th driver to reach this legendary marker. But Wolff has commented on Hamilton’s future contract with the team, letting it slip that he could be with them for a while longer:
“We talked a few weeks ago about how long our partnership can go and the figure discussed was about five to 10 years, so I think we can go to 400,” Wolff said after being asked about the future of Hamilton in F1.
“Someone once said you have not just got to win the eighth – why not ten? Says he who is a second of the pace,” Wolff joked.
Kimi Raikkonen currently holds the record for the most Grand Prix attended with 349 race starts, but Fernando Alonso will take the crown this year with him currently sitting on 344. Michael Schumacher and Jensen Button also sit above Hamilton currently, but the Brit will soon surpass them, especially if what Wolff says is true.
But history isn’t on Hamilton’s side, as so far in the sport no racing driver has ever won a race after 300 starts. So far this season, Hamilton has already started this trend. If he doesn’t win a race this season, his record of winning at least one grand prix each season will conclude in 2022.
