FIA Wants To Know More About Hammond’s Crash…

After Hammond’s crash in Switzerland, the FIA has demanded an explanation from the Swiss Federation over what happened at the Hemberg Hill Climb run.

As I’m sure you know, Hammond was driving a Rimac Concept One. A car that boasts a price tag of over a million dollars, and a power figure on the good side of 1000bhp. In the disastrous crash, Hammond flipped the car and managed to crawl out before it burst into flames.

He only sustained a fractured knee and a bruised ego, but the FIA want to know more about the accident as Auto Sport Schweiz have confirmed. Their statement reads like this:

“As the international press reported, a serious accident occurred on Saturday, June 10 2017, during ‘show runs’ during the Hemberg Bergrennen. “This accident tainted the reputation of motorsports in general and mountain races in particular, and the FIA has been forced to demand an opinion from Auto Sport Schweiz. “Our association is obliged to examine the events in detail, and to initiate disciplinary proceedings. As this is an ongoing process, we cannot provide any further information to third parties at this time.”

In particular, they are questioning why Hammond’s car was still travelling too fast before the corner after the finish line. It’s far too early to start pointing fingers, but the answers behind this horrific accident will eventually be revealed by this ongoing investigation.

The FIA says this:

“As part of the operating procedure for the recently established World Accident Database, the FIA asks ASNs to provide information regarding incidents of a serious nature around motor sport events anywhere in the world.

“This is for the purpose of populating the database with real facts and data, and accurately informing the development and advancement of motor sport safety technology and procedures.”

Whether this is just procedure or if the FIA actually believe something to be amiss, we don’t know. But as soon as we know more, we will of course let you know!
