James May: Grand Tour Presenter Buys Yet Another New Car

James May, who is currently finding it difficult to film another episode of The Grand Tour alongside fellow presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, has decided to spend his time doing other things. Specifically, collecting a new car for his ever-growing collection. His new car comes in the form of the new Toyota Mirai, which replaces the older version he just sold.

James May Is Selling The “Nicest Car” He’s Ever Owned For Just One Reason

In the video featured on DriveTribe, he takes the hydrogen-powered car to the streets of London where he sits patiently in heavy traffic. He explains how it’s very quiet as he accelerates slowly through the city.

“It’s very, very pleasant up to 8 mph,” he tells the camera as he inches forward in traffic. Because of the slow speed he’s travelling at, the car is giving him a bird’s eye view of what’s around him and the sensors go crazy as cyclists and moped drivers fly past him. I can personally tell you that Toyota sensors are more sensitive than the nipples of an Inuit, so this is no surprise.

Unfortunately, this is when the video ends as James gives up on the shoot thanks to all the traffic. So instead, here are a few specs that you need to know about the Toyota Mirai.

Prices start at about $50,000, and for this, you get quite a good look vehicle. It’s not overly flashy, but the front grille looks intimidating, the wheels are flashy, and there’s a sense of Kia Stinger about it that I rather like.

It is, obviously, entirely hydrogen-powered, with one motor producing 182 horsepower. 0-60 comes in 9.1 seconds – fast enough for Captain Slow – and it weighs in at under 2-tonnes which is less than its battery-powered brothers. Overall, car sites have reviewed it highly, focussing on its brilliant interior and features.

Behind The Scenes

Alex Harrington

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
