The Grand Tour

Richard Hammond is Criticized for Poking Fun at Shamed Entertainer? Stop It.

This week there has been another offended party for something that was said, done, shown etc etc, on the show. But believe it or not it wasn’t Jeremy Clarkson in the cross hairs.  It, in fact, was Richard Hammond that made a funny that offended.

So what was it that Richard said that has child abuse charities in an uproar?

It was during the sports cars film when Hammond said, “Jeremy loves Alfa Romeos because back in the old days they were great, but not any more.” He then went on and added, “Plenty of things were great, Greece, Rolf Harris. Can’t love them now.”

For those who don’t know who Rolf Harris is, he was an Australian entertainer whose career has encompassed work as a musician, singer-songwriter, composer, comedian, actor, painter and television personality.  As of July 2016 Harris  faces eight allegations against seven females dating from 1971 to 2004 – one of whom is said to have been under 13.

Clearly the joke was just that, Richard making a funny. But it’s obvious that there are a lot of eager ears to hear things and take them far from context. According to Peter Saunders of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, “It sounds inappropriate. I think anybody who makes light of the rape and abuse of children have got issues themselves.”

This week Harris jokes, last week, smuggling jokes….next week? I guess we will have to wait and see.

  1. It’s Too Gear, in everything but, name. And by that proxy that alone, just for the mere fact of its existence. Offends!

  2. I am so sick of the bleeding hearts. These 3 guys are inappropriate and childish and that’s why we love them. If you are offended then don’t watch. It’s pretty simple. I don’t watch the shows that I don’t like and there are plenty that offend me. You have an “Off button”… it’s the red one… use it.

  3. I agree with the three of you. It’s getting so much harder now days to say anything at. It seems that there will always be listening ears to you. And God forbid you say something even remotely close to “funny” because you know it’ll upset someone. It truly is becoming a very very sad world we live in.

  4. Everyone wants to find offense in everything. We are on the verge of socialism. What has made society so uptight? It’s a comedy show based around cars; if you can’t take a joke please stick to dramas. For those that didn’t get the joke, he didn’t poke fun at what he did but rather, he was once someone you would call great but not any more. The end!

  5. So the context is at one time in the past these things may have been admired for one reason or another but, presently the actions they’ve commited have erased any good feelings toward them. How in the hell is this supposed to be offensive to anyone.
