Richard Hammond Revisits Grand Tour Rimac Crash: “I Still Think He Owes Me”

Despite the news that The Grand Tour may soon be coming to an end thanks to Jeremy Clarkson, DriveTribe, the YouTube channel behind the famous trio, is still going strong. They’ve just released a video of presenter Richard Hammond reacting to the many crashes he’s been involved in from Top Gear to The Grand Tour. Specifically, he discusses his Rimac crash, admitting that he still believes Mate Rimac owes him.

Sat behind his Smallest Cog desk, he’s been asked to watch and react to the crashes he’s been invovled with during his career.

“We’re here because I’ve been asked to watch and share my feelings on some videos,” he tells the camera.

“What it says here. Richard Hammond crashing. Okay. For six minutes and 27 seconds. So this must barely be like 2% of the crashes I’ve had on television over the past, but I dunno how many years. So, I’m gonna have a look.”

Talking of The Grand Tour special in Colombia, Hammond admits he didn’t know what he was doing when he reversed into Jeremy’s car.

“I dunno what I was doing on that one. I did Burma in a truck, and when we are doing those long journeys. You’ve been, you know, with the same people for two weeks, gets a bit tense. Jeremy was in quite a bad mood hard to imagine I know.

“James was off over there somewhere,” he said waving off-camera. They’d been fighting bit of a lover’s tiff had occurred. I was in front of Jeremy in my truck and I couldn’t see him and I backed into him quite hard. He went berserk. I couldn’t hear that. I went forwards, assumed he’d gone, still couldn’t see him, and backed into him again.

Watching the Rimac crash he still didn’t quite know what to say:

“I still, to this day, I don’t know… God, the finished line. Red Mist. ‘Yeah, keep your foot in’. It’s an immensely powerful car, and it oversteered off backwards. Fell 300 and something feet, landed upside down, and shortly after that on fire, my leg was broken. But I got out.

“It was a hell of a test of the crash sell on that car.

“Mate Rimac who started that company is a genius, now Bugatti. I still think he owes me as a test driver.”

Hammond continues to describe the pain he still gets from a crash from Top Gear driving a Hiace van:

“The whiplash I got from that one went right over my head and I still get it if I’m really tired and stressed. I get, it’s like a stiff neck.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
