The Grand Tour Madagascar Special Reasoning Revealed: “Why Are We Bothering?”
After The Grand Tour’s last episode got off to a mixed start thanks to its focus on boats over cars, the team knew they had to go all out on the follow-up. Set in Vietnam, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May tried their hands at boats, and while it was an interesting stab at something new, fans were displeased.
Unfortunately, it turned out that not only were some fans annoyed that they episode didn’t centre around cars, but they also didn’t care for the huge wait between episodes. And now with the pandemic pushing this next episode even further back, this next episode set in Madagascar has to blow the pants off people. But what’s the story behind the choice of location?
Andy Wilman explains all in a recent interview wiht BT.
“It’s some jigsaw pieces that came together,” explains Wilman. “We knew we had to come back with cars with a bang after the Mekong and we heard about this road which is believed to be one of the world’s toughest roads.
“Someone else looked around and said Reunion has this incredible road on it. It’s night and day the difference between these roads. And from there you start to piece the bits together.
“We could start on one island and go to another island. And the cars for one island are completely wrong for the other island and there is your adventure.
“And the last bit of the puzzle is ‘why are we bothering?’ And it didn’t take much research in that part of the world to get stuck into pirates. It’s all over their history. They were our ingredients and off we go.”
The new episode is released this Friday 18th on Amazon Prime Video. We’re very excited to see how it pans out.
