Top Gear Update: BBC Formally Suspends Show After Freddie Flintoff’s Crash
The latest series of Top Gear has been suspended by the BBC after Freddie Flintoff, was involved in an incident while filming. The incident occurred in December last year at Top Gear’s test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey.
The presenter received medical care at the scene before being taken to the hospital for further treatment. The BBC has expressed regret and apologised to Freddie, who is currently receiving support from the network in his recovery.
The BBC said in a statement:
“Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34.
“We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.
“We understand this [halting the show] will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year.”
In light of the incident, the BBC has decided to suspend the production of series 34. A health and safety review of the show will also be conducted to ensure that the production team and presenters are safe.
Top Gear has been one of the BBC’s most popular shows since 2002. It has had several presenters over the years, and Flintoff joined the show in 2019 as one of its hosts, co-starring with Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris.
Flintoff’s family has kept very private since the incident and has kept updates to a minimum. The last update that was given by people close to the family was that the presenter had recovered physically but the psychological impact was much greater than they initially realised.
