Beyond the Boundaries: Porsche 911 GT3 RS from Episode 4

It’s been said that the Porsche 911 GT3 is as close to perfect as one can get to a what a sports car should be. So how can you improve upon something that close to perfection? Porsche’s answer, the 911 GT3 RS.

Let’s pull back the doors, open the hood and learn more about this amazing daily drive-able track oriented beauty.

“The GT3 is one of my favorites. Then the GT3 RS shows up and everything is better” – Randy Pobst

First Impressions

The very first thing one may noticed about the GT3 RS is the wing on the back went from big to even bigger. It also has wider hips and some added scoops. Visually it’s clear this machine was built for one thing and that’s to dominate on the track. But is that only thing the GT3 RS is good for? Absolutely not. It’s comfortable, very forgiving and there’s room for things, (if you’re good a puzzles).

The Exterior

The GT3 RS has had some outside changes added to it from its sibling. Most notably is the big vents over the front wheel arches. These vents create much needed downforce over the front axle which equals out over all downforce created from the massive rear wing. Not only do these vents add downforce but improve cooling significantly throughout. The RS also has been widened slightly making room for some fatter tires. Porsche also added 21-inch rear wheels over the GT3’s 20-inch rears.

So what do all these modifications do for the GT3 RS?

Altogether they make it so you can run your GT3 RS longer and harder during your track day visits also you’ll stand out a bit more at Cars and Coffee, which let’s face it, that’s what we want.

The Interior

Faux-suede-trimmed bucket seats greet you when you open the door, inviting you to a soft comfortable sitting experience.  As for your hands, you are treated to the same faux-suede on a fat grippy steering wheel with a yellow, (or other color if you choose), stripe at the 12 o’clock position.

You’ll also notice, looking around the cabin, there is zero let down on things such as (optional) carbon fiber, leather, cloth door puller tabs and even a customized door sill guard if you so choose.  The GT3 RS only offers a seven-speed PDK transmission, which for what this car was built for isn’t too bad of a thing.

The Engine

The GT3 RS gets a bit more under the hood than the GT3. It is a 4-liter flat 6 that produces 500 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque which will take you to 60mph in 3.1 seconds. You can opt-in for a bigger gas tank (23.9 gallon) and with a range of up to 20mpgs highway the GT3 RS could make for a decent Grand Tourer (me saying that may be blasphemous to some and I apologize).

Overall

If you are into taking your car to track days then this just may be the absolute perfect car for that. The 911 GT3 RS truly offers a driver just about anything you could want in a sports car. With options to add in things like heated leather seats to having Porsche remove the A/C and stereo for weight loss, it may be impossible to find anything else like it.
