James May Admits He Was Involved In Small Car Accident: “I’ve Had A Light Bin”

As The Grand Tour presenters return home from a busy two weeks of filming in central Europe, a video prepared before they left by James May and Richard Hammond went live on their newly-branded YouTube channel.

Hammond and May, alongside front-runner Jeremy Clarkson, celebrated their finished stint of filming with a gin and tonic and some air guitar from executive producer Andy Wilman over the weekend. But in the video, filmed quite a while ago by the look of May’s shorter hair, Hammond and May sit down to a quiet gin and tonic as they discuss James’ new gin, Asian Parsnip.

The video is brilliant, documenting exactly why The Grand Tour – and Top Gear before it – works so well. They have immeasurable chemistry as they slowly get a bit tipsy and talk about the philosophies of life. But about two thirds of the way through the video as they discuss what Hammond is known for, May admits that he’s stolen his co-presenter’s USP of crashing after he “had a light bin recently”.

Talking of how everything Hammond is known for has been stolen by other people, their conversation begins with his drink of choice:

“Every fashionable bearded, denim jacket, fashionable boot wearing hipster is drinking the stuff,” Hammond complains. “Even you’re making it,” he tells May who’s sat opposite him.

“Yes, well I am a hipster obviously,” James retorts.

“Well would you stop stealing my stuff?” Hammond asks. “It’s like waistcoats, gin…”

May quickly questions when he’s ever worn a waistcoat before Hammond corrects himself.

“I mean you like, more broadly,” he says. “Like everybody, stop stealing my stuff.

“If being short becomes fashionable, which I have been doing for a long time, which is about the only thing I’ve got left.”

The two bicker for a moment before James reminds Hammond that he hasn’t even got crashing as his “USP” because he’d recently had an accident, too.

“You like crashing things,” James tells him. “That hasn’t become fashionable yet.

“Although I’ve had a light bin recently – I apologise.”

No more details were given on this crash by May, but the video is definitely worth watching as they both sip on gin and slowly ease into the realm of tipsiness.
