Jeremy Clarkson: ITV Stands Behind Presenter But Condemns His Comments On Meghan Markle

ITV’s CEO Carolyn McCall has weighed in on the drama currently circulating around Jeremy Clarkson after it’s been demanded that the presenter should be removed from Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.

The Grand Tour presenter is rumoured to be dropped by Amazon Prime Video after his comments on Meghan Markle received significant criticism. He quickly apologised for his comments, but a week or so after the initial drama, he posted a much longer explanation to Instagram where he was able to explain himself further.

Writing in the now-deleted column, he said:

“I hate her [Meghan Markle]. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.”

“At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”

Following this, a letter complaining about the presenter’s place in ITV was sent to the CEO of the channel, describing what the ex-Top Gear wrote as “grotesque”, and asking for him to be fired.

This has now received a response as published by Deadline:

“Everyone at ITV is very aware of our responsibilities as a Public Service Broadcaster and I’d like to be clear that the comments made were Jeremy Clarkson’s own and are in no way endorsed by ITV. There is no place on ITV for the comments made in that article.

“It is also worth adding that Jeremy Clarkson is not an ITV employee and that when he appears on ITV it is as a quiz show host on a show which does not provide a platform for his opinions.”

It’s been confirmed that one more season has been confirmed for Jeremy and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, but nothing further has been commissioned.
