DriveTribe, the automotive social media site started by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May has announced that it will be shutting down after only five years of operating. The site, which has amassed millions of followers and car enthusiasts, has blamed “severe reductions in marketing budgets across the industry”, and therefore a drop in revenue. It now plans to cease at the end of the month.
Jeremy Clarkson said the following in a statement:
“We’re all really disappointed that challenges in the industry – not in the least helped by the ongoing pandemic – have simply made it impossible to continue with the business in its current form,” he admitted.
James May also added to this in his own statement: “But ultimately, this is a business, and businesses are being kicked in the nads by everything that’s going on in the world,” he penned.
Hammond, keen to keep the momentum going has invited users to join him on his own social media sites where the fun will continue: “Come and join me on the channels along with lots of familiar DriveTribe faces as we continue to keep the brand alive and the conversation going.”
Fortunately for the thousands of users across the site, the company has made all of your content downloadable before the site inevitably shuts down.
We here at Grand Tour Nation should extend our thanks to the site for hosting us temporarily after it first began growing. We enjoyed the community we and The Grand Tour trio created, and are grateful for the chance to meet and talk with so many new people. The site certainly had its issues, and obviously financial struggles, but what it’s done for the community has been nothing short of brilliant.
We’re very excited to see where the Clarkson, Hammond, and May turn next. If they will at all.
