What is General Trivia and where can you find it?

Scene 3: May Gets Treats

tgt5p4

Interesting fact, the Dutch really are the tallest ‘average’. James gets some treats and stays quiet…nothing abnormal here.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:01:41

The Dutch really are the tallest nation on earth. A study published in the journal eLife found that the average Dutch man is a strapping 6 feet tall. The smallest men in the world are found in East Timor, which is why this country is not known for it’s basketball team.

Scene 3: Generous Gift

tgt5p5

Jeremy tells us what the Dutch have given us all. Jeremy also shows us a picture he really enjoys…of buff Dutch Policemen.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:02:45

The speed camera was invented by Dutch racing driver Maurice Gatsonides. He once said, ‘Even I can’t escape my own invention because I love speeding’. Doh.

Scene 5: Let’s Begin

tgt5p6

Welcome to North Africa, the…obvious place to test sports cars.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:04:10

The retro-looking ‘Marrakech’ title at the start of the lightweight sports car test is an homage to the titles used in old movies filmed in glamourous overseas locations.

Scene 5: The MX-5

tgt5p7

Richard has chosen the Mazda Miata MX-5. Japan’s hot little two seater that has stood on the proving grounds of ‘sports cars’ and has proven to be a top choice of many for a very long time. (Since 1989)

General Trivia  Starts at 0:04:37

The Mazda MX5 has a 1/5-litre, four cylinder engine making 129 horsepower. It can cover 0-62 in 8.3 seconds and has a top speed of 127mph.

Scene 5: Whoops

tgt5p8

As James teaches Hammond what a “sports car should and shouldn’t be” Hammond chimes in with a bit of an interesting fact about Mr. DeLorean. I love their little arguments.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:05:29

Lotus boss Colin Chapman signed a deal with John Z. DeLorean to develop the infamous DeLorean DMC-12 sportscar. IT all became a bit complicated, DeLorean got caught in an FBI drugs string, and some of the project budget went ‘missing’.

Scene 5: The Zenos

tgt5p9

James’ pick for this test. The Zenos E10 S! Also available as an E10 or E10 R. Zenos is a British auto manufacturer that started in 2012 with the E10 as their first example.

Scene 5: James and Hammond Pick Apart the Alfa

tgt5p11

James and Richard do what they do best, pick on Jeremy. Here they go through and pick apart what they can on the poor Alfa.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:10:38

Some of the Alfa 4C’s interior fittings are taken from other cars. Other, cheaper cars. Such as the Fiat Punto hatchbacks.

Scene 5: Drag Race

General Trivia  Starts at 0:15:45

The Zenos E10 S has a power-to-weight ratio of 345 horsepower-per-tonne. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has a power-t0-weight ratio of 207 horse-per-tonne. Jeremy might have forgotten to look this up before the drag race.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:16:16

The Alfa 4C was designed in Milan, but it’s actually made in the Maserati factory in Modena. Because they know more about building exotic things.

Scene 5: Jeremy Wants a Weigh-in

tgt5p14

Jeremy wants to find a way to weigh the three sports cars to prove that the Alfa is in fact the lightest. There is a problem though…there isn’t a weigh station at the resort.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:16:50

It is unclear if Jeremy’s lightweight sports car jacket was bought for a bet. But if it was, he definitely won.

Scene 6: Police Cars

tgt5p15

Today on Conversation Street! Police cars, which country has the worst? Not America. Perhaps England? James thinks so.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:18:30

Jeremy’s skepticism about Dutch-made cars is well founded. Cars made in Holland include the Volvo 340, the Daf Daffodil and the Mitsubishi Carisma.

Hammond’s car board game cannon is normally used to make cars do improbably massive jumps in movies.

Scene 7: Tactics

tgt5p18

The point of this game is all about tactics. Richard isn’t “thick”….or is he? James will answer that for us.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:28:20

Thick – A quaint British word meaning daft, stupid, a bit like Richard Hammond.

tgt5p19

With the game a tie James makes a very hard decision as to where to drop his “bomb” to finish the game, if he misses Richard will win.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:33:19

Horatio Hammond is a reference to Horatio Nelson, famed British naval commander who led his forces to victory in the Battle of Trafalgar, thereby preventing the French from invading England. He died in the process, and was honoured with a massive monument in London’s Trafalgar Square. The founder of the Pagani supercar company is also called Horacio, but this wasn’t a reference to him.

Scene 8: Celebrity Brain Crash!

tgt5p20

This week on Celebrity Brain Crash, Golden Earring! Who are they you may ask? They are a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961. They are known for their hit songs Radar Love, Twilight Zone and When the Lady Smiles.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:37:33

Golden Earring’s Radar Love was first released in 1973. It reached number 7 in the UK charts, number 13 in the US charts, and was number 1 in Holland for 13 weeks. Or was that years?

General Trivia  Starts at 0:40:11

When Jeremy says ‘Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side’ he’s making a reference to the chorus of the UK number 1 it, Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth. The Grand Tour – bringing you bang-up-to-date cultural references since 2016.

Scene 8: The Inflator

tgt5p23

Jeremy demonstrates how to blow up this second occupant for your travels down the express lanes.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:51:04

During the filming of the sports cars item, some British paparazzi turned up and tried to spy on the plucky hosts going about their business. Unfortunately for these photographers, they got stopped by the police, had to admit they didn’t have permits to work in Morocco and were marched back to the airport. Ooops.

Scene 10: Hammond Makes a Discovery!

tgt5p30

Hammond has stumbled upon what he believe to be an ancient civilization lost in time. It may be just a movie set though.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:51:48

Scene 10: All Dressed Up

alfa-4c

They decide to have a real race through the “ancient city”. Jeremy dresses for the occasion.

General Trivia  Starts at 0:53:15

‘The Dick From Del Monte’ is a reference to ‘The Man From Del Monte’, a tinned produce ad campaign shown in Britain in the 1980s. The titular character in the ads went around tasting and approving fruit while wearing a pale linen suit. Which, if you thing about it, was an impractical choice of clothing.

Scene 10: The Race

tgt5p31
